Author and philosopher Ilchi Lee settled in Sedona, Arizona because of the area's immense natural beauty and the vastness of its wilderness, foregoing the draw of big cities like New York or Los Angeles.

Perhaps he was on to something, since a new study from Douglas Mental Health University Institute researchers suggests that living in a bustling city may cause stress and other mental disorders.

"Previous findings have shown that the risk for anxiety disorders is 21 percent higher for people from the city, who also have a 39 percent increase for mood disorders," said co-author Jens Pruessner. "In addition, the incidence for schizophrenia is almost doubled for individuals who are born and brought up in cities."

In a study on the brains of individuals who lived in the city and others who lived in more natural settings, the researchers found that city dwellers had more stress in brain regions having to do with emotion.

Results of this study underscore the importance that nature plays in the personal development of a human being.
